U.S Population by Race
Americas Racial Breakdown
The fabric of the United States is woven with an array of cultural threads, each representing a diverse range of races and ethnicities. In a country where almost 40% of people identify as part of a racial or ethnic minority, understanding the composition of the population is more than a statistical endeavor — it is a window into the heart of a nation’s identity.
Utilizing 2019 data from the Kaiser Family Foundation, which draws upon the American Community Survey (ACS) by the U.S. Census Bureau for the year 2019, I have developed an interactive treemap visualizing the racial and ethnic distribution across the United States on a state-by-state basis.
The Current Landscape
As of 2019, America’s racial breakdown is as follows:
White (Non-Hispanic): 60.1%
Hispanic: 18.5%
Black: 12.2%
Asian: 5.6%
Multiple Races: 2.8%
American Indian/Alaska Native: 0.7%
Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander: 0.2%
It is important to note that these figures exclude Puerto Rico, which holds a significant population that identifies as Hispanic.
